What Do Our Bodies Need?
We started this company because we couldn't find customized vitamins. When it comes to our own bodies and health we are driven to perfection. We knew what we wanted in a vitamin system. We wanted it to be easy… no driving, no deciding which supplements to buy, and no opening 10 different bottles. We wanted the supplements to be recognized and utilized by the body…to get to our cells as nature intended. Our instincts told us food is best. And we wanted science to back that up. We wanted the vitamins to be safe and non-toxic because we'd be taking them day in and day out. For us, health is not just the absence of physical disease, but the addition of an energetic sense of well being. We like feeling great. We are not scientists. But as we investigated where vitamins come from and how they are made, two things became clear-- we would challenge the market by creating the ultimate delivery system for exceptional nutrition and to do that we would need to be as informed as the nutritional scientists, doctors and registered dieticians that sat on our Board of Advisors.
Food is Best vs. Pharmaceutical Grade is Best Approach
 We've been researching supplements actively for over 3 years now and Steve has been involved with nutritional exploration and customized vitamins for over 25 years. What has emerged from our research are two controversial schools of thoughts regarding vitamins. The "food is best" school maintains that all the cofactors, for example in an orange along with vitamin C are what makes it such a powerful nutritional product.
According to this school it's not how much of a supplement you need but how complete it is and how closely it resembles food. They point to many studies that show that food in all its complexity has specific carriers that bring food to the cells where it is recognized and utilized. It's the utilization part that is emphasized as they maintain that plenty of substances can be absorbed by the blood stream but the odds are slim that they are taken in.
There is only one company that holds the patent to actually grow food based supplements. Edible Science™ is the only company to provide this patented product in convenient day packets.
The other school is the pharmaceutical grade approach which falls into many sub categories like orthomolecular, megavitamin, and a newer category called neutraceutical. This school relies on standardized products that are made by a limited number of chemical companies. A lot of these companies you would recognize such as Cargill, Monsanto, Roche etc. Many studies show the value of pharmaceutical grade supplementation. There are several criteria by which pharmaceutical grade vitamins are judged. The product must be in excess of 99% purity with no binders, fillers, excipents, dyes, or unknown substances. There are a few novel vitamin ingredients that are synthesized from the start to be closer to the molecular structure of food. They are designed to be more accessible to the body by shortening the steps the body has to go through to get the nutrient in the form it can accept. These products are much more expensive then the stock pharmaceutical grade products.
Our Belief
 We at Edible Science™ believe both schools of thought have their place. When it comes to predicting what will happen to the body in the future based on what we take today, we'd rather cover all the bases. While we like the common sense idea of food and Foodstate® products we can't argue with the science behind much of the newer developments in nutritional delivery that come from the newer "neutraceutical" school.
